​Horrific Train-Car Collision in Jonai Leaves One Dead, Another Critically Injured

​DHEMAJI | June 5, 2026: A devastating railway accident shook the Dekapam area under the Jonai subdivision in Dhemaji district on Friday afternoon, claiming the life of a woman and leaving another individual fighting for survival. ​The fatal collision occurred at approximately 2:00 PM at an unmanned railway crossing. ​ ​According to local sources, a four-wheeler bearing Arunachal Pradesh registration (AR-02A-1548) attempted to cross the open, unmanned tracks. At that exact moment, the oncoming Ledo–Murkongselek passenger train was approaching the crossing. ​The train rammed into the vehicle with massive impact. The collision was so severe that the car was dragged for nearly 500 meters along the tracks, reducing the vehicle to a mangled heap of twisted metal. ​A woman belonging to the Riba family, originally a resident of Tajgaon in neighboring Arunachal Pradesh. She tragically succumbed to her injuries on the spot.The second occupant of the vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries. After receiving emergency first aid locally, the victim was immediately rushed and referred to Dibrugarh for advanced medical treatment. ​Following the tragic mishap, local police and railway officials rushed to the spot to assess the situation. A bulldozer had to be deployed to clear the severe wreckage of the vehicle off the tracks so that normal train operations on the line could safely resume. ​Local authorities have registered a case and launched a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The incident has sparked fresh anger among local residents, who are demanding immediate safety interventions—including the installation of permanent gates and manned guards—at vulnerable, open crossings across the subdivision to prevent such recurring tragedies.
