Local First: KHADC Rejects Blinkit’s License Application to Protect Shillong’s Small Traders

SHILLONG : In a major move to protect traditional livelihoods, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has denied a trading license to quick-commerce giant Blinkit, halting its expansion into Meghalaya. Speaking to PTI, KHADC Chief Executive Member Winston Tony Lyngdoh stated that the council will not grant licenses to any app-based platforms that rely on heavy discounts and doorstep delivery, citing a direct economic threat to over 4,000 local grocery shops that act as crucial lifelines for indigenous youth and families. While Blinkit had initially onboarded hundreds of delivery partners and secured a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the local Dorbar Shnong of Nongrim Hills, it was forced to shut down operations entirely after failing to clear the mandatory council approvals—joining other previously blocked models like Instamart in the council's sweeping stance against rapid e-retail.
