Guwahati Gears Up for Ambubachi Mahayog 2026: VVIP Darshan Canceled, Kerala Carpets to Line Nilachal Hills

Guwahati, June 8, 2026: The historic Nilachal Hills are preparing to welcome lakhs of devotees as the annual Ambubachi Mahayog at the Sri Sri Kamakhya Devalaya is set to begin on June 22, 2026.

With just two weeks left for the mega-spiritual congregation, both the Assam State Government and the Kamakhya Devalaya Management Committee have finalized grand arrangements to ensure a smooth pilgrimage.

Key Dates and Temple Timings

According to Kabindra Prasad Sarma, the Bor Doloi (chief priest) of the Devalaya, the auspicious timings and schedule for this year's Ambubachi are as follows:

  • Ambubachi Prabritti (Commencement): June 22, at 9:08:22 PM. Following traditional rituals, the main doors of the temple will be closed immediately after.

  • Temple Doors Closed: June 23 to June 25.

  • Nivrittli & Reopening (Nitya Puja): June 26, morning. The temple doors will officially reopen to general devotees after the performance of morning rituals.

  • Daily Campus Entry: Devotees will be permitted inside the temple premises from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM only. To facilitate cleaning and security sweeps, no one will be allowed to stay inside the complex past 6:00 PM.

Complete Ban on VVIP Darshan

In a move to prioritize common pilgrims, the Devalaya Management Committee has announced a complete suspension of all VIP and VVIP Darshan arrangements from June 26 to June 28.

"Millions of devotees wait for days just to seek the blessings of the Goddess after the temple reopens. Keeping their convenience in mind, we have completely canceled special passes for those three days," stated Bor Doloi Sarma.

Special Comforts and Security Measures

Expecting an increase of nearly 50,000 to 60,000 pilgrims over last year’s turnout of 7.85 lakh, the management has scaled up infrastructure:

  • Kerala Carpets for Walking Pilgrims: Except for a few emergency and authorized vehicles, vehicular movement up the hill will be strictly restricted. To ease the uphill walk for devotees, special heavy-duty carpets are being sourced all the way from Kerala to cover the stretch from the Kamakhya Nursery to the main temple.

  • Enhanced Surveillance: The number of CCTV cameras and volunteers on duty has been significantly increased to manage the massive crowds.

  • Drinking Water & Amenities: Multiple drinking water kiosks and medical stations are being set up along the walking routes.

Accommodation and Transit Camps

While the temple authorities are arranging food and lodging inside the Dashnami Akhara exclusively for visiting Sadhus and Sannyasis, the Kamkhya administration has set up dedicated transit camps for general tourists and pilgrims at Boripara, Maligaon, Adabari, and the Bharalumukh playground.

With the state machinery working in tandem with local committees, Guwahati is all set to host one of Eastern India's largest religious festivals with utmost safety and devotion.
